Bahrain:The pearl of the arabian gulf.(Dilmun)

Bahrain is the largest of the archipelago known as the State of Bahrain. Located centrally in the Arabian Gulf the islands are strategic to both shipping and defence. Since the early days of sea faring people ; Bahrain has been occcupied by many rulers. The last colonial rulers were the British. In 1971 Bahrain became Independent and as a member of the United Nations a part of the world community in good faith.

Bahrain other wise known as Dilmun of the past is ruled by the Al-Khalifa family. A constitution gaurantees the Head of State position to the Emir. The current Emir is Sheik Isa bin Sulman Al Khalifa who took office in 1961.

Bahrain's economy is mainly service based. While Bahrain does produce some oil for export the quantity is not large enough to make it a key member of the Opec. Bahrain thus is not a member of Opec. The current estimates are that oil from present sources will cease to exist in Bahrain in about 10 years. Bahrain does however possess good refineries for refining oil from places such as Saudhi-Arabia. Located about 12.5 miles from the east coast of Saudhi-Arabia the country maintains excellent ties with Saudhi- Arabia and other Gulf countries through an organization called the GCC or Gulf Co-operation Council. This unity was a key factor in the formation of a success military alliance during Desert Storm for the liberation of Kuwait from the Iraqi regime.

Bahrain is also famous for it's tourism and aluminum production. Because of a more liberal environment Bahrain is capable of pleasing many tourists from around the world and the gulf. In the future such an environment will be the key to an upbeat economy especially when reliance on oil cannot be obtained.
